Mary Wong | Enrolled Agent, Principle (click image for bio)
From humble beginnings
As an immigrant from Hong Kong, Mary Wong, EA, has overcome struggles such as language barriers, diligently working her way through college and eventually starting her own business. Her heart's desire? To invest in her local communities and help small businesses succeed through her accounting seminars and as board member of Asian Youth Center help bring awareness of how AYC/Project NEO can help our children who face academic challenges.
To professional success
Mary graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with an undergraduate in Computer Information Systems and currently lives in San Gabriel, CA. and through a series of successful professional experiences ended up starting a successful accounting firm in 2007.
Comes true purpose
Around the same time, Mary also had the opportunity to create a non-profit offering free tutoring to children in her local community. So in 2010, Ms. Wong founded Project NEO, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides after school tutoring and mentoring to at-risk youth in grades two through eight. During the academic year of 2015-2016, over 250 at-risk youth have received individualized tutoring. Over 200 young people were trained to provide tutoring services to youth in need of academic support. As part of its leadership development program, Project NEO initiated a Student Leaders Board which consists of 12 bright individuals from local high schools and colleges.
In order to expand Project NEO's tutoring outreach to more local schools, Ms. Wong explored creative options. Asian Youth Center reached out to Ms. Wong to create a partnership that merged resources to strengthen the tutoring program for children, a component Asian Youth Center was searching for. On November 2016 the merger between the two organizations was finalized.
As difficult as it was for Ms. Wong to relinquish herself from Project NEO, she prioritized growing resources to help increase at-risk youth to become our leaders of tomorrow. Mergers in the non-profit world are rare but as Mary always says, "Where there's a will, there's a way."
In addition to her non-profit organization, Ms. Wong has an accounting firm that has served the local communities for over 10 years. As Exact Tax, Inc. has grown, so has their philanthropic outreach. Last year they launched free seminars, helping attendees understand everything from navigating audits to filing taxes while waiting for a green card.
In 2014, Senator Ed Hernandez awarded Ms. Wong a Woman of the Year Award for her work with her non-profit, Project NEO. She was also the recipient of the 2014 Monterey Park Business Woman Award. Her leadership roles have included serving as a board member of the Asian Youth Center, treasurer of the Alhambra Police Foundation, member of the East Los Angeles College Foundation President's Circle and advisory board member of the East Los Angeles College Business Department.
Overall, Mary Wong has dedicated most of her life to serving local communities through her accounting knowledge as well as her non-profit that helps academically challenged children.
Trusted community leader
Her outstanding leadership and tireless efforts in addressing the needs for tutoring children who are academically challenged and providing tax seminars for the community is one of the many reasons people and put their trust in her.

What is something most people don’t know about you?
Something about me that most people don’t know is my passion in astronomy. The vast, dark and empty space surrounding us humbles me. I’m extremely curious of the unknowing and truly believe that if we keep looking up, we’ll find something out of this world, literally.
